  • For the Tzatziki
  • 1 (150g) pot natural yoghurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh dill
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh oregano
  • 4 mint leaves, finely chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Cucumber
  • 1/2 cucumber, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • pepper to taste
  • For the Tomatoes
  • 3 ripe tomatoes, diced
  • 1 pinch paprika
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  1. Place cucumber into a colander. Sprinkle with salt and let drain for 30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the tomatoes, paprika and olive oil. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix together yoghurt, olive oil, garlic, dill, oregano and mint. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Pour a layer of each mixture in a glass, alternating colours and layers. Bon appetit!

What To Eat And Serve With Tzatziki Sauce

Tzatziki is a delicious Mediterranean sauce made out of yogurt with minced cucumber, garlic and lemon juice. I usually buy a huge jar of tzatziki sauce at Costco (the Hannah brand of tzatziki sauce pictured above). Even though it&rsquos a big package of sauce, it gets used up within a week at my house :) There are so many things to eat and serve with tzatziki sauce, and it&rsquos so delicious!

I came up with the whole 12 different ways of eating tzatziki sauce! Here&rsquos how you can serve and eat the tzatziki sauce:

1. Sauce For Meat

Tzatziki sauce goes great with all kinds of meat &ndash chicken, beef, pork and lamb. It&rsquos especially good with grilled meat!

The most popular way to eat tzatziki sauce is with gyros! I also often serve the tzatziki sauce with my homemade ground beef kefta kabob.

Tzatziki sauce is a great way to spice up plain meat, like chicken breast. A little tzatziki sauce on the side will transform a bland chicken breast into a flavorful meal!

2. Sauce For Fish

Tzatziki sauce also tastes really good with fish. My favorite fish to eat with the tzatziki sauce is white fish!

3. Sauce For Felafel

Felafel and tzatziki together taste like they were made for each other! Dip the felafel balls in tzatziki, and soon there&rsquoll be no more felafel left :)

4. On The Burgers

You can use tzatziki as a topping for the burger patties. Tzatziki tastes delicious on both the regular meat burgers and the veggie burgers. Especially veggie burgers! Tzatziki transforms the veggie burgers from boring to super-yum!

5. On The Sandwiches

Who needs mayo when you got tzatziki! For a new twist on traditional deli sandwiches, spread the tzatziki sauce instead of mayo.

6. In The Pita Wraps

Mix the pita filling with the tzatziki sauce to make it moist and flavorful! Tzatziki sauce will enhance any pita wrap sandwiches, such as grilled chicken pita or the felafil pita wrap.

7. Add To Mashed Potatoes

Here&rsquos a unusual use for a tzatziki sauce &ndash I bet you haven&rsquot heard of this one :) When you make mashed potatoes, add the tzatziki sauce to the potatoes while you are mashing them. Mashed potatoes with the tzatziki sauce are very flavorful and unique.

Another traditional way of eating tzatziki sauce is by dipping pita bread into it. This is similar to other appetizer dips like hummus and baba ganoush.

You can also serve tzatziki sauce with chips instead of salsa. Tzatziki is especially good with homemade pita chips.

Recipe Summary

  • 1 cup French green lentils, picked over
  • Fine Himalayan pink salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds medium multicolored carrots, cut on a bias into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 1/2 pounds medium parsnips, halved lengthwise and cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ancho chile powder
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup chopped mint, plus torn leaves for garnish
  • 3/4 cup chopped cilantro, plus leaves for garnish
  • 1 cup coconut milk yogurt (see Note)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced seeded cucumber
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped dill
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped chives
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Fine Himalayan pink salt
  • Pepper

Make the lentils In a large saucepan, cover the lentils with 2 inches of water and bring to a boil. Simmer over moderate heat until just tender, 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, add a generous pinch of salt and let stand for 5 minutes drain. Spread the lentils on a rimmed baking sheet and let cool slightly.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400°. On a large rimmed baking sheet, toss the carrots and parsnips with the cumin, coriander, chile powder and 1/4 cup of the olive oil. Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast the vegetables until tender and browned in spots, 20 to 25 minutes.

In a large bowl, toss the lentils with the warm roasted vegetables, the lemon juice and the remaining 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Fold in the chopped mint and cilantro and season the salad with salt and pepper. Transfer to a platter and garnish with mint and cilantro leaves.

Make the tzatziki In a small bowl, whisk all of the ingredients together and season with salt and pepper. Serve alongside the warm lentil salad.

How to make tzatziki

Tzatziki is one of the easiest things to make, especially now, when thick Greek yogurt is so easy to find. If you have Middle Eastern or Greek markets where you live, it is worth seeking out to see if they carry some of the traditional brands, which can be even thicker and richer and more delicious than the brands that are found in large chain grocery stores. Here is a great basic recipe to begin with. Some tips before you start:

  1. Always use full fat Greek yogurt if you can find it. It is the primary ingredient, so you want it to be really beautiful on its own. Remember that fat carries flavor, so using fat free yogurt diminishes the purpose of the dish.
  2. If you can find English or Persian or seedless cucumbers, they will be sweeter and less watery than their regular counterparts.
  3. If you aren’t a fan of raw garlic, you can use minced fresh shallot or scallion as a great substitute.
  4. If I have time, I grate my cucumber about 20-30 minutes ahead of time, salt it lightly, and then let it rest in a colander over the sink to let the excess water drain away, and then give it a good squeeze before stirring it into the tzatziki. This is less important if you are going to eat the tzatziki right away, but if you plan to make it ahead, or want to make a large batch to have around all week, it is a good way to prevent it getting watered down as it sits.

Tzatziki Salad

We all remember the first recipes we knew how to cook, right? For me, it was chocolate chip cookies and tzatziki. And while everyone understands the perfection that is a good chocolate chip cookies, I’m not sure everyone really gets tzatziki. And in case you fall into the camp of people not yet sold on tzatziki, this is for you: YOU HAVE TO TRY IT.

Rich and creamy Greek yogurt combine with refreshing cucumber and zingy lemon + garlic. We eat it with veggies, slather it on pita, drizzle it on Roasted Chickpea Gyros. It. Is. Perfection. And in the name of giving tzatziki all the attention it deserves, today we’re making a “deconstructed tzatziki” of sorts in the form of this Tzatziki Salad!

There are two main components to this Tzatziki Salad: the cucumber, and the yogurt. Thinly slice the cucumber (using a mandolin slicer to make it even easier). We’ll combine everything else to form a yogurt-garlic sauce. Then just throw it all together and serve!

To make this Tzatziki Salad you’ll need:

  • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup sliced red onion
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp chopped fresh dill
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper

  • 3 inches of cucumber
  • 1 cup plain non-fat Greek yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill and/or mint
  • 1 Tbsp . olive oil (optional)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1/2 tsp . salt


  1. Lay 4 sheets of paper towel on the counter. Use a box grater to grate the cucumber into fine shreds onto the paper towel.
  2. Roll the paper towel around the cucumber and squeeze the liquid out as much as possible without tearing the paper. Transfer the cucumber to a medium sized bowl.
  3. To the bowl add the yogurt, dill or mint, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and salt. Stir.
  4. Taste and add more salt if desired.

How do you make Tzatziki sauce?

I can't tell you enough how easy this is. Don't let the fancy name fool you, this is a cinch to pull together!

First, grate the English cucumber into a bowl. I squeeze the excess moisture off by putting the grated cucumber in a tea towel and squeezing it until most of the water comes out.

Next, mix together the cucumber, Greek yogurt, grated garlic cloves, dill, lemon juice, and salt and pepper together. I also like to add a drizzle of olive oil too but that's completely up to you.

Pop the sauce in the fridge for about 4 hours to allow all the flavors to come together before serving.
