Prince Charles Shares One of His Favorite Breakfast Recipes
Go ahead, make a brunch worthy of the heir to the British throne.
Prince Charles loves an egg dish. Rumor has it, he even eats a boiled egg every day. But this Sunday he's sharing a more involved breakfast recipe. On Twitter and Instagram, Clarence House posted one of his favorite recipes for Cheesy Baked Eggs.
The recipe, which includes the note "where possible, use organic ingredients," was released in association with the British Cheese Weekender a free, online festival centered around British cheeses, and supporting the industry that makes them during the coronavirus pandemic.
"One thing that undoubtedly brings many of us great comfort is good food. It is, therefore, deeply troubling to learn that this crisis risks destroying one of the most wonderful joys in life &ndash British cheese!" the Prince of Wales, who is patron of the Speciality Cheesemakers Association, was quoted as saying on Instagram.
"British cheesemakers need our support during this time of great uncertainty, and we can all help in the simplest way. By sourcing British cheese from local shops and cheesemongers, and directly from producers online, you can make a vital contribution to keeping these small businesses afloat during the prevailing crisis."

The farmer's market can be a great place for discovering different varieties of fruit that the grocery stores have either long forgotten or never carried about in the first place. On a trip to my most fruqented farmer's market - the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market, I found one of the vendors there was selling Queen Anne cherries. Never heard of that variety. It was before the days of me having a smartphone so I didn't look them up, I decided to just buy them and try them at home.
What are Queen Anne cherries?
They are a sweet, light colored cherry, who also go by the name of Royal Ann(e). They are cherries that you can eat out of hand or cook with. You can find these cherries in both Michigan and Oregon, and I assume Washington as well. They are very similar in appearance to Rainier cherries. You might have trouble telling them a part at first glance. When you bite into them, the difference could not be more clear. Queen Anne cherries are on the very tart side while Rainier are very sweet. Your taste buds will have no problem distinguishing the two.

Queen Anne Used for Cordial Cherries
You may recognize that Queen Anne name from the Christmas season. Although cherry season is far away from the Christmas season, Queen Anne cordial cherries are a popular gift item. I personally don't like them so don't buy them for me. Queen Anne cherries are also popular in the making of maraschino cherries.
Canned Queen (Royal) Anne Cherries
If you can't find fresh queen anne cherries not all hope is lost. You should be able to find the canned version. Here is what you can buy:
- serve over ice cream
- on top of creme brulee
- stir into a cola
- topping for pancakes
- use in between layers of a cake
- add to cocktails
- make a craft soda
- serve as a topping along with cheese and baguette
- bake with brie, serve with baguette
- serve on top of oatmeal
- serve on top of tapioca pudding
- dollop on top of cheese cake. Be sure to try my sous vide cheesecake!
- scoop on top of brownies
In this recipe I use the rind of a lemon to thicken the cherry syrup. To maintain a gluten free, grain free, vegan recipe I use the natural pectin in the white part of the lemon to thicken the syrup. Many fruits naturally have pectin in them. With genetically modified produce, often the pectin is less than would naturally occur. Lemon rind, the white part and the yellow outside, have a higher concentration of pectin than the juice. By using the rind of a lemon in jam, it will naturally thicken the jam by the pectin being extracted through boiling. An organic lemon would be a good choice for this project.
Fresh cherry recipes
The most important ingredient in any of these recipes is the cherry. Fresh, plump cherries, to be exact. Look for fruit that isn’t wrinkled or dried out looking. Look for smooth skin and firm fruit. If the cherries look a bit brown, bruised or puckered, that means they have seen better days and you should pass over them.
All of my recipes are for sweet cherries, as that is what is generally available in the stores. Sour cherries are difficult to find fresh, unless you happen to get lucky, or you live in Michigan – the sour cherry capital.

Although summer is fresh cherry season, canned and frozen cherries, preserved at the peak of goodness, are available year' round for your favorite recipes. Tart cherries are used in a variety of recipes including the traditional cherry pie. Other than those that are locally grown and sold at farmers markets or orchards in late spring, tart cherries are rarely sold fresh. Most are canned and sold as sour cherries, pie cherries, or cherry pie fillings.
